Scott Bateman

Obituary

With very heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Scott Bateman, sadly taken from us too soon at the age of 57.

Scott leaves behind his wife Janet, his 3 girls, Kathleen (Jordan), Lindsay (Chad), Kelsey (Brad), Aurora (Alëna) and Jacob. He had 3 grandchildren, Maisie, Layne, Adeline and was looking forward to a new grandbaby in September.  Also left to mourn are his hundreds of Unifor Canada brothers and sisters.

Scott was known as a gentle giant to many, fiercely protective but gentle and loving both at home and at work. His smile, quick wit, sense of humor and laughter were infectious. He always had a good story to tell. He was a natural entertainer.

Scott started at Lear Corporation at 19 years old. He proudly worked on the line for many years, eventually becoming an Alternate Steward, then elected to the Bargaining Committee finishing his career at Lear as Chairperson and Executive Board Member in 2018 after 32 hardworking years. From there he accepted a position as a National Representative in Ottawa with Unifor. In 2022, he was appointed National Road Transportation Director with Unifor.  A member of the International Transportation Federation, Scott represented Unifor at global conferences in both Japan and Morrocco.  Scott was never a stranger to picket lines and stood in solidarity with union members and the greater union community.

Scott was a family man who cherished every minute spent with family and friends.  He loved good food and was happiest cooking up a massive feast on his bbq, smoker or grill with a cold beer or ceasar and some good classic rock (Pink Floyd and Steely Dan) playing on his speaker. When hosting parties he would cook enough for a village. Go big or go home he would say… nobody would leave hungry.

An avid golfer, he adored his Friday morning golf dates with his guys, followed up with a nap and late afternoon Happy Hour with his neighbors.

Scott was truly one of a kind and lived his life to the fullest. He was such a source of love, joy and happiness to everyone who knew him.

We are so proud to share that Scott's generosity and kind spirit continued after his passing as he graciously donated to the Trillium Gift of Life Network.

"For long you live and high you fly

And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry

And all you touch and all you see Is all your life will ever be."

-Pink Floyd

A Celebration of Scott’s life will be held on Saturday February 22 from 1 - 5 at the Local 222 Union Hall located at 1425 Phillip Murray Avenue, Oshawa Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
